The Reykjavik Open is very pleased to welcome back Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to the Reykjavik Open. Shakh needs virtually no introduction as he has been in and around the elite tournaments for a long long time now despite the relatively young age of 30.
Mamedyarov is the current Azeri #1 and has many tournament victories under his belt. He was the 2003 Junior World Champion and in 2013 he won the World Rapid Championship, Shakh led the Azeri team at the recent European Team Championship in Reykjavik.
With his entry Mamedyarov is now the new #1 seed at the tournament and it must be said that the two top seeds (R.Rapport is the current #2) couldn’t have a more interesting playing style. Both are known for their aggressive uncompromising chess along with imaginative and creative ideas. Both are unafraid to experiment and gamble!
Mamedyarov is surely eager to add another Reykjavik Open tournament win to his resume, having already tied for first in 2006.
