The Turkish GM Mustafa Yilmaz won the annual Harpa Blitz tournament which was held on Saturday 10th of March.
A total of about 60 players showed up for the blitz and along with Yilmaz the top contenders figured to be Uzbek GM-elect Noridbek Abdusattarov and former winner Yaacov Norowitz.
In the end, these three turned out to be head and shoulders above the rest. Yilmaz only allowed one draw in the whole tournament against Abdusattarov and finished on 8.5 out of 9. Abdusattarov allowed a further draw against Konstantin Kavutsky and finished on 8 out of 9 followed by Yaacov in 3rd place with 7 out of 9
A very nice win by Yilmaz who pocketed rougly 400 Euros for his win and it makes one wonder why more GM’s don’t show up for the blitz, otherwise Yilmaz will be coming every year for this “easy money Saturday” 🙂
Tournament organisation was in the hands of IA Ingibjorg Birgisdottir and FM Ingvar Johannesson and the tournament ran very smoothly win no incidents. Make sure not to miss the blitz if you are coming next year, I think we can make it a 100 player event for next year!
