It is with great respect and deep appreciation that we mark the passing of Friðrik Ólafsson, Iceland’s first chess grandmaster, who died on April 4th, 2025, at the age of 90.
Friðrik was a towering figure in Icelandic chess history, earning the nations first grandmaster title and achieving international acclaim for his performance in the Candidates Tournament and victories over five world champions during his career. He also served as President of FIDE from 1978 to 1982.
A lifelong supporter of chess in Iceland, Friðrik remained closely connected to the Reykjavík Open, participating for the final time in 2013 at the age of 78. His presence and continued interest in the tournament were a source of pride and inspiration.
This year’s Reykjavík Open will be dedicated to Friðrik Ólafsson. A photo exhibition in his honor will be on display at the venue, Harpa Concert Hall.
We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Icelandic chess community.
