The Reykjavik Open will once again be held in the Harpa concert hall and conference center in the heart of downtown Reykjavík, Iceland. The dates March 15th-21st have been negotiated with the venue. The playing schedule itself is still pending but obviously, there will be two double-round days like this year and all the exciting special events you’ve come to expect and love such as the pubquiz and the blitz.
In 2024 we will be about 2 weeks earlier than this year. This means more chances to see the Aurora Borealis but you might also have to pack that extra warm sweater…or get a traditional Icelandic wool one!
In 2023 we had a record number of participants! 401 players started the tournament from no fewer than 46 countries! A record 34 Grandmasters as well. Nils Grandelius was the winner after a hard-fought tournament.
In 2023 we also had kind of an innovation where we had a “Streamers corner” where GM Simon Williams, WGM Dina Belenkaya, and WFM’s Alexandra Botez and Anna Cramling streamed their games to their audiences. One could argue that the reach of the Reykjavik Open has never been bigger!
We expect the tournament to maintain its popularity and therefore the tournament will be capped in 2024 at 400 participants!
Let us start making plans and see you in 2024!
