The 2nd round was surpringly low on upsets. The first upset was all the way on board 21 where the Dutch FM Dimitry van Leent won against the current Swedish champion, GM Eric Blomqvist.
The Dutch GM Jorden van Foreest was perhaps closest to disaster of the other GM’s, facing this clear pawn down position against Norwegian FM Eivind Olav Risting.
Jorden managed to fight back and escape with a win for the second round in a row. Most of the other top seeds had an easy day at the office winning relatively clean games.
There were several draws on the middle boards close to the top but we still have 44 players on full 2/2.
GM Johann Hjartarson is the only Icelander on 2/2 and showed off a little bit with a nice move after a nice attacking game vs his Finnish opponent.
Johann played the nice move 18.Bd8! which enables him to break completely through on h7
Play will resume at 17:00 local time when the 3rd round takes place. We will have our first Grandmaster clashes in this round.
