Only a few days ago we introduced a 2700+ player in Dmitry Andreikin. It only took us a few days to announce a brand new #1 seed for the 2017 GAMMA Reykjavik Open in April. It’s none other than Anish Giri making his 2nd visit to the Reykjavik Open.
Anish played the tournament in 2013 which was fantastically strong. The winners then are among the leaders now in Wijk aan Zee where Giri is currently playing. We are talking of course about Pavel Eljanov and Wesley So. Since then all these players have made tremendous strides. So passed 2700 in Reykjavik and is now in the World Elite as is Eljanov.
Anish Giri has firmly established himself as one of the top players in the world and people forget that he is still very young. Anish is for sure a potential World Championship contender. He is fresh of a nice win against Nepomniachtichi in Wijk aan Zee which broke a streak of consecutive draws which has been the main talking point about Anish in recent years. Solidity however is the foundation of further improvements and once he starts capitalizing on his usually fine positions out of the opening he could go all the way to the top.
Giri will be accompanied by his wife, Sopiko, who is herself a tremendous player. We welcome them both to what figures to be a very interesting event!
